10 Goal Setting Tips Leading to Sure Success

For decades our auto industry used a goal setting system that did NOT lead to success — quite the opposite in fact. S.M.A.R.T. goals simply don’t work — never have and never will.

Why? Because 3 of the components are flawed and inaccurate. So executing them leads to null success.

Being known as “the go to woman” for setting AND ACHIEVING goals for several years, my workshops are filled with folks that sit —  with jaws dropped — at what is NOT known about setting goals. Mostly what we DO know is inaccurate. As a small business owner, entrepreneur or solopreneur, S.M.A.R.T. goals don’t work there either! Having taught goal setting and achieving for nearly 5 years and using the tips myself to take some hands that weren’t so great and turning them into success, are real time results! 

Teaching goal setting for nearly 5 years and using this method after being dealt some ‘not so great’ hands in life for more than 30 years, I can tell you that these tips work.

The only goal setting and achieving formula of which I am aware is what is outlined by Napoleon Hill in Think and Grow Rich. All the recent personal development greats — Proctor, Tracy, etc., use THIS system as they KNOW it works.

After years of hands on experience and watching people follow these tips and achieve results by choice, I thought YOU might want to know HOW to actually ACHIEVE what you want. It does not mean you will ACHIEVE your goals as you would have to DO all these things (or as many as you can for your best ‘shot’ at success).

And we know that we humans don’t always DO what we KNOW TO DO. That’s emotional intelligence and hinges on our ‘human performance gap.’

You can start with just a few if that works for you. Note how most of them are quite the OPPOSITE of what we ‘think’ we know about setting and achieving goals. If S.M.A.R.T. goals worked at all, our auto industry may not have failed so fast and more than 3 of each 100 would be healthy, wealthy, and happy.

1. Do not use your CURRENT RESULTS to set your new goal.

2. Do not select a goal where you know EVERY STEP TO ACHIEVE IT.

3. Select a goal that is so LARGE that it excites you; you FALL in LOVE with IT.

4. It should be so LARGE that it SCARES you or you feel AFRAID.

5. Be specific with AMOUNT OF MONEY it requires and THE DATE you intend to have IT.

6. Determine only your first few small steps.

7. Do not focus on HOW you will do it. Focus on WHY you WANT IT.


9. Share your goal only with LIKE MINDED people.

  2. Thanks Michelle. Grabber is that you can’t focus on why AND how at the same time! So focus on WHY we want something, squeezes out any concerns about HOW we’ll get there. Always nice to have you comment and find value.

  3. It’s another example of one size does not fit all. Your success in goal setting may not work at all for me. One of my clients who wanted to “get organized” was advised by a friend to make a list. My client’s list got so huge that she was overwhelmed and shut down. Nothing got accomplished. When she broke the list into bite sized pieces she was able to get things done.

    • I guess it is much more than making a list. Lists overwhelm me! All goal setting success hinges on some or all of these parameters. We may not use all of them, but if we ignore them, we don’t reach success at all. It has nothing to do with making lists at all of course (you know that). Success in this definition is setting goals and following through until they are achieved. It seems that if we know all the steps, we (most everyone) does not do them. If we focus on HOW, we are stopped because we don’t have answers. There will be the occasional person who can break through that of course. I purport that if you set and achieve goals, they do work for you, but may need more articulation than the simple list I have offered. Each point has a very DEEP story behind it. Once that becomes clear, there is no question. Love that you took the time to comment and I would welcome a deeper discussion at your convenience.

  4. I, coincidentally, found this as I was searching for inspiration to write about goal setting today. I love how you broke down the basic principals from Napoleon Hill. I get so overwhelmed with lists and such so this really helped me. Thanks a ton!

After many years of assimilating Hill’s greatest work, I have found that these tips are just what the doctor ordered to not only start goal setting, but to get into action, be really inspired and REACH the achievement for which we intend!
