Why We Don’t Listen to One Another

listeningIn 1996 I learned an amazing lesson for myself when I took my first Landmark Forum. The program is an eye-opener for those curious in why life is going the way it is for us. We learned more than a dozen powerful insights or distinctions that weekend. When I returned home, I remember having an interesting conversation with my husband.

  1. I made a statement.
  2. He perceived it based on what he thought I meant.
  3. Then he reacted to his point of view.
  4. I told him that was not what I meant.
  5. He said but you said such and such.
  6. And around in circles we went!

It took me 3 tries explaining this distinction until he got that his perception of my intention was not the same as my intention!

I realized he was actually having a dialogue with himself! I might as well have left the room because it was between what he believed I meant and his response to that!

Sixteen years later, having a conversation with a married gentleman at a social function (he was attending one of my mastermind groups) he shared about a breakthrough he had with his wife. As he told the story of realizing he really had never listened to her (the thing she kept telling him she wanted), the lesson from long ago ‘popped’ into my mind, as clear as it was all those years ago. I shared my conversation with my husband all those years ago … and he said exactly! I can share that his wife was thrilled that he got this because he was LISTENING TO HER, finally!

This is about distinguishing our perception of what someone else means … and checking in with them to see if the perceptions and your intentions match.

How often do we react to what someone says based on what we ‘think’ they meant?
How often has someone reacted to what you said — and they were way off base?

Without distinguishing this for ourselves, we never really listen – really listen to what people are saying. We are simply interpreting what we hear, based on our own view of the world; no two views are identical by the way, and then having a dialogue with ourselves!

Perception changes with new information so our ‘view’ of things changes when and if we actually take the time to find out what the other person really meant and wanted to share.

To make a change right now in your own listening, it would mean simply stopping a moment and asking the other person “did you mean this when you said thus-and-such?” (Successful sales people use this technique all the time with their clients. They know if their potential client is not ‘heard’ they will not buy.)

Without intentionally taking this next step, the other person is left unheard — and our greatest desire as humans is to BE heard and to MATTER. One person is right and the other is left feeling wrong. There is no room for a real dialogue. There is no collaboration. There is no growth.

Consider —  WANTING to know what they meant so you can find out WHY they said it and then expanding your own perception … while theirs is also expanding!

Characterization of God

MC900056759I caught the last 15 minutes of Joel Osteen’s weekly television show this morning. I rarely do, yet when I do, I always get an insight for myself. Today was no different.

Osteen talked about ‘God doing this,’ and ‘God doing that,’ to bring abundance, with a snap of his finger, into your life; bringing you from the back of the line to the front of the line, shifting the tides in your favor. He made God out to be a very busy man!

His presentation was speaker perfection … make a point, tell a story; make a point, tell a story … have a percentage of ‘feel good’ moments every so many minutes … the things I learned in 2009 from Speaker Expert Steve Siebold when I took his Gove-Siebold Workshop and became a certified speaker.

I noticed I saw for myself, I conjured up an image of God, as Osteen spoke — and gestured as God might, crossing his arms, granting wishes, changing the ‘wind,’ and I reminded myself that most all of us think in pictures, and images have us ‘feel’ a certain way, and the way we feel draws more of people with ‘that’ into our lives based on universal law. I saw a Santa-type, benavelent God. Do we each have our own unique character of God with which we establish quick rapport?

Osteen’s stories were motivating, Bible-based, and easy to understand, thereby boosting my own vibration and good feelings, further peppered with hope and gratitude — deriving the EXACT vibration for optimum co creation! As God moves to us, through us, and on to the next being, to be honored with this repeating process forever — we are in best harmony or flow with universal law when in the state of gratitude and love.

“I am the mirror of your greatness and you are the mirror of mine.”

“I shine an intense light in the world. How big my light appears to you is in direct proportion to the light you have within yourself.”

So I concluded that it is not the characterization of God that causes good fortune. It is using that image to find, match, and feel, and then generate the vibration of love and gratitude to quickly align, and co-create life in optimum abundance, by being precisely who and what we will attract. Consistently generating this feeling, the more we easily build Faith in the power of the universe to bring us the things we want.

“We bring up this perfect feeling at will by always and intentionally looking for the greatness in others.”

If we recognize love and gratitude in others it means we have it in ourselves. The more we purposely practice looking at people and situations this way — finding the good — the more often and quickly we are in collaborative alignment with God and universal law. As we ascend our personal mountain of conscious awareness leading us again to our genius and infinite potential, we look back and realize what seemed to be a convoluted path getting to this level, really was a simple straight line to live our unique purpose of service, and once again become one with all there is.

The Art of Setting Intentions

Art of Setting IntentionsWe do this all the time … set ‘intentions.’ It’s like breathing! It’s not unlike walking from here to there. Because we walk from one room to the other (and have done so all our lives), does not mean walking is an ‘art’ for us. Those who practice ‘walking’ and use it as a tool for health or sports, as example, can really get in the flow and turn ‘walking’ into an Art.

Setting intentions is typically done by default and without distinction of the process. And it is not done with any consistency, so consistent results are not reaped. When intention setting is done ‘on purpose,’ and with clear use of the distinguishable process from beginning to end, the result, which very few enjoy, is the ability to establish true Faith around setting any intention or experiencing it as an ‘art.’ And from Faith comes our Belief that whatever intention we set, we get (without violating the rights of others, of course).

Default, unintentional, intention setting occurs when you plan a birthday party. What is it we do when we plan a party? We begin with the end in mind, first (thank you Stephen Covey for you 2nd habit of 7). We picture the party, set the date, pick the location, choose the decorations, the food, the music, the gifts, and the attendees. The clearer the picture of the party, the closer to fruition it will come. We planned it!

Then of course we work ‘backward’ to the present, figuring what has to be done when and where to ‘pull it off.’ It’s fun. When we are doing something we love, the intentions are more likely to show up. Why? Because the emotion, feeling or vibration of happiness and love, is the precise context and vibration required to make a connection with the universe.

Whatever we are intending (on purpose or by default) is already on its way to us, as we move toward it! If we aren’t paying attention to what we are intending, we get what we get and it is based on how we are feeling, which sets our attracting vibration. So if ‘it’s a poor economic market’ is what we think of most of the time, our personal results are proof that it IS a poor market. We can however think the opposite as based on the universal law of polarity, while it is a poor market, it also must be a great market. If we believe WE are the right person and people are ‘looking for us’ with our skills, when we look for positions, they are right there in front of us. So both exist simultaneously.  A good incentive to start really ‘thinking’ about what we are thinking about!

The visualizing of the ‘end’ is a key in artful intention setting. The more specific, the more detail, the more sure you can be of it happening the way you see it. And above all, the intention to be ‘artful’ must be ‘seen’ as though it already happened – in present tense!

So we do it and absolutely could easily be an expert at it. Without consistency and distinction, however, Faith in the process is not built. From Faith comes BELIEF that we can set intentions and have them show up at will. We never out-perform what we believe we are capable of achieving, so if we don’t ‘see the process’ and ‘measure it’ for ourselves, we don’t believe it works … and what we believe … we get.

To be artful in any endeavor we must have perfect Faith in the process and we achieve that when we do things on purpose and intentionally. We hear ‘have Faith,’ yet does anyone every say HOW to develop
Faith?
Rarely, so I will.

Developing Faith in intention setting (and getting) comes in three distinct phases. You can ‘build it’ on purpose for whatever you want to ‘believe’ you are capable of achieving.

Repetition is the 1st Law of Learning. That means we learn by hearing and addressing material in spaced consistent intervals over time. That’s how we learned out multiplication tables, remember?  We didn’t review them only on Mondays. We did it every day or every other day, at the same time, the same way, for months. Now if I’m asked to this day what 9×7 is, I know 63 without thinking. So do you.

When you set an intention and think about it, laugh about it, visualize it, add color, form, weather, etc., over time, you begin to expect the intention to occur. Expect means you now believe it is ‘likely to occur.’ This is phase 1 of building perfect Faith.

As you continue to visualize the outcome or intention over time, you then believe it will happen … that is you now have a ‘firm opinion’ that it will occur as you have intended. That is phase 2 of building perfect Faith.

And finally with this continuation of behavior, you will develop perfect Faith that your intention will occur. That is you don’t need any measurements of proof … you KNOW that it will happen and no one can change your mind. That is phase 3.

Setting intentions is a process and the final result – perfect Faith in making intention setting an Art – does not show up like the proverbial ‘light bulb’ moment. No. It sneaks in and nips you on the heel. You now have set so many intentions and followed the process of developing Faith in the universal process and your ability, you know that you know it works … and are enjoying ‘playing’ with your life design.

7-Step Process for Setting Artful Intentions for Consistent Manifestation:

  1. Set the intention or outcome you desire.
  2. Be very specific about the intention with lots of details. [I want money vs. I want $10,000.]
  3. Picture it already a ‘done deal.’ How great does it feel?
  4. Get excited when you think about your intention. It’s that vibration that begins the process.
  5. Write out your intention in long hand and review and add to it every week.
  6. Make a 10 minute appointment with yourself a few times a week (and keep it) to review your written statement of intention.
  7. Keep your intention to yourself until you have perfect Faith in the outcome.

This is not a challenging process, so try it on. You can start with intending you get a good parking spot at the mall. Do this consistently, and when spots begin to show up consistently for you, you are already on your way to believing you are capable of co-creating with the universe and its consistent laws via Artful Intention.

Goals- Intentions- or Resolutions?

goal1
Goal: the end toward which effort is directed
Intention: a determination to act in a certain way
Resolution: the act of determining or solving

As we again turned the corner on another year – 2013 – we are faced with these three words: goal, intention, and resolution. Note that they are distinct from one another. There is no need to be confused. Because the opposite or confusion is Order; and order is the first Law of our universe, we take action when we are clear and thoughts are orderly; and we tend to do nothing when we face confusion.

1. Goal setting works. It works when you have accurate information on the how to’s. Since we have never been taught those how to’s in school, what little information we have about setting goals, rarely leads us to experience reaching them, as most information is inaccurate. There simply is not enough information available to be effective. Those who seek to learn what the 3-5% of folks who DO set and reach goals know, can easily join that group with a little learning.
2. Intentions are always top of mind. When I intend for example to see the ‘greatness in others,’ it is a reminder every day so it soon becomes a habit.
3. Resolutions follow evaluating or determining an issue or challenge. I resolve to do this from now on; or that.

This is the time of year when the smartest of the 95% of those who are unaware of the facts around setting effective goals and do not thrive or live abundantly, come up with excuses and justifications to NOT set goals. You’ll hear ‘goal setting doesn’t work’ as example, and for that person, they do not! They really believe it and so they live in a state of survive in lieu of thrive. They want everyone to think that way … as there is comfort in numbers.

I am reminded of the phrase “the masses have always been wrong about everything, and always will be.” It takes a bit of courage to step into the 3-5% … courage to step away from the crowd, to have faith, and to be in action, rather than sitting around, one more year, complaining how goal setting doesn’t work.

When you are ready, the right teacher will be there to take your hand and teach you the universal truth about setting goals. Proper goal settings is in perfect harmony with universal law and living in abundance! Reach out and accept their assistance so you are not one of the masses, living one year 90 times, rather than 90 consecutive years.

If you are ready and in the Raleigh NC area on Friday Jan. 11, from 9-1 pm, you can have your mindset on goal setting completely transformed in 4 hours. Is that all you have to do? Of course not! You have some upkeep after the workshop, but it is easy. DETAILS  (click).
