The 4th Grade Expert

edisonRemember when we started school? Remember how we looked up to the older kids? I do.

I remember being ‘in awe’ of the older kids and how they seemed to navigate through school, classes, students and teachers with ease, while I never seemed to know which way to turn.

We are all experts (to a degree) … the 4th grader is an expert in all things … to the 3rd grader! Picture of Thomas Edison … who didn’t manage well in public school and was taught primarily by his mother!

The question is this … will YOU seek the advice of the 4th grader, the high school grad, or the college grad? Will you do your ‘homework’ to find out who is the best?

Experts are people who have done deep study in an area over time, who have embodied that study, live it, walk it and talk it, and now teach it to people who get consistent results, measurable, over time.  Leslie Flowers

I don’t confuse having a college degree with affording someone expert status in that field. They are not necessarily synonymous.

If I need heart surgery, not only had there better be a big fat degree on the wall, but he/she also must have done hundreds (if not thousands) of these surgeries and have consistent measurable results over time.

So it’s not about degrees. Jobs that require saving lives, require degrees and certifications.

There are however many industries that do not require degrees or certifications to be an expert.

Speakers, authors, coaches, facilitators, and online product marketers do not need a degree or a certification. Some coaches as example have certifications. Some do not. The certification does not make the expert coach. It is via the application of the ‘art’ that expertise arises.

Because a coach paid and passed written work, does not mean they engage well with human beings. Or that they practice their craft. It only means they took and passed a course.

In the same light, a person can learn to coach without getting a certification and become a world class expert!

You can also look at cub reporter Napoleon Hill who was engaged by Andrew Carnegie (steel magnate) almost 100 years ago to interview successful members of our society. The reporter became an “expert in success.’ He studied it, lived it, walked it talked it, and wrote what most consider to be the greatest contribution to the 20th century Think and Grow Rich.

Don’t hold yourself back in stepping out in your field because you don’t ‘think’ you are, or could be, an expert!

You are an expert if your area of expertise is one that people gain consistent measurable results over time when learning with you! If you love the field you are in — really LOVE it — take the time and revel in the results of those you teach. For their results constitute your expertise.

Mastermind

You well know the experience during an inspired interchange with someone like minded, how ideas begin to flow and ‘pop’ into your mind. When this occurs you are not creating a third mind, but exponential minds. You get all sorts of ideas that you may never note again when engaged with another.

When asked why it is we can see what others cannot see about hidden behaviors, yet cannot do this for ourselves, I got to thinking. Perhaps the reason we cannot do this for ourselves is that we are ‘meant to’ engage with other human beings.

There are only two ways of which I am aware that we ‘receive’ information we require to reach what it is we want. The information can be positive or negative. Seems positive makes sense, yet we receive a lot of information by default – that is, we receive it and are simply unaware. That’s how the negative thinking seeps in and eventually becomes a belief. And of course in every case, whether we are aware or not,  what we believe we get. Results match our belief in our own abilities. We can talk about how capable we are, yet the hidden part of our personality may not be in alignment with what we ‘say.’

The first way is via intuition. Wayne Dyer says that if prayer is when we speak to God; his answers come via intuition. That sense of right or wrong. Going to bed with a problem and waking up with the answer – that’s God or spirit or the Universe accessing our conscious mind and placing the answer for our awakening.  Intuition can however be blocked by fear. That is why the early morning ‘answers’ are the best as there is no time to second guess the message.

The other way we receive the information we need is through other people. So if we’re the kind of person who does everything ourselves and rebuffs contribution by others, we are cutting off the voice of God! That leaves only one way … intuition.

You’ve likely experienced what is often called a coincidence by those who do not yet understand that there is no such thing – when an answer to a question we have shows up ‘unexpectedly.’ As we believe and move toward what it is we want, what we want is “already moving toward us!”

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.” Henry David Thoreau.

This is what Thoreau was pointing to … that success, true wealth, health and happiness does not routinely come from a job we hold so we can STOP looking to our career and employers to make us wealthy, regardless of how good we are at what we do. It will come as we are called to our purpose – to serve others, rarely from a job-job.

Keep your eyes and ears open. Accept contribution from others. Be in places where others congregate. Watch for the unexpected surprise offer or contribution. Say YES when someone offers to help, even though you may want to do it yourself.

Masterminding with others who are like minded – thinkers! – allows YOU to do the things you are passionate about … while they do the things they are passionate about, but you are not. So gather people who you love and respect; who believe in lifelong continuous learning; and share your ideas with them. They will come up with answers you never even considered! Meeting weekly with one or more folks like this at a prescribed time and day, will enrich and enhance your journey to higher awareness.

Just Keep Swimming

This drops of awareness blog reveals small lessons in growing your own conscious awareness.  The idea is that we learn best in small bits, applied in equally spaced intervals, over time. With each drop you may choose to ‘get something new for yourself,’ and then you begin to see that you actually DO have infinite potential! You were born with it and by now you know that it’s the collection of non serving beliefs that stop us from reaching even the smallest goal.

Linear, bullet pointed text works for some. Non linear experiential text works for many more. These drops are developed for real implementation of the skill, which eventually, if you ‘just keep swimming …’ you will find yourself face to face with what you want. And then you’ve heard ‘be careful what you wish for,’ right?

Children’s movies often have principled lessons embedded within. Yet if the parents do not ‘get’ the message, will it be lost on the children?  I saw Finding Nemo again this weekend, this time in 3D, with two of my darling grandchildren. What struck me was the character Dorie, beautifully articulated by Ellen Degeneres, was discussing principles and universal laws! Oh, yes, and levels of conscious awareness. I saw it and you would too, but I missed it the first time.

If you’ve been reading these drops over time (or even if not), which principle of success, universal law, and level of conscious awareness to which the musical phrase,  ‘just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming ….‘ refers?

What fun I thought it would be when I am watching films with my grandchildren, to figure out how very ‘smart’ the writers really are. They are embedding powerful, life changing information in sweet children’s tales.

Principle is Persistence, the 8th principle of success (Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill)! One of two principles that are absolute requirements in reaching goal, dream, intent, vision or any kind of success. The other and first of course is DESIRE. That would KEEP you swimming, would it not?

Law is Motion, everything is always moving; we’re either moving forward or backward toward our goal!  We can reach the top of M t. Everest taking only small baby steps, we just can’t stop!

Level is Discipline! At this level you are at a point that you can give yourself an order when no one is looking and you still do it! After that comes experience as you know, and in  this film, Nemo is finally reunited with his father.

The SECRET to all of this???

When you muster desire and persistence and get in action, and keep swimming, everything you desire is already moving toward you, as you are moving toward it. Nemo was looking for his father while Dorie and dad were ‘swimming’ to find Nemo. Leslie Flowers

And with persistence and discipline and ‘singing,’ pure Faith in our ability is acquired. With perfect Faith under your wing, whatever you desire is yours! You are moved through the three levels of creating an unwavering Faith in your abilities to the point where “you know you know it” and need no measurement as proof.

The smallest things in our every day environment are filled with these messages. Each time you recognize one consciously, you have taken one more small step up the mountain of conscious awareness.

Start looking at everyday things for a big surprise! I got one at the movies this past weekend. It came as a surprise to me, but was definitely intended by the movie makers.

Napoleon Hill – The Man

What kind of man was Napoleon Hill? Was he kind? Did he treat people well? Did he respect women? Did he apply his works? Was he a cusser? A womanizer? A cheat?

How would we know these things about him to begin with? We can read about him and what he reported.  Wait, you don’t know WHO he is? Not to worry!

Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich and the 1st ever consolidated Philosophy of Personal Achievement, was a cub reporter for a newspaper when he met Andrew Carnegie, the great steel magnate!

Carnegie offered this 20-something the opportunity to meet, know, and interview more than 500 of our country’s greatest achievers in diverse areas of life and business. And there would be no pay! Hill met with them more than once and charted their businesses over a 20 year period. Who in their right mind would take on a 20 year gig without pay? Perhaps that’s an indication of who Napoleon Hill – the Man – was.

Why did Carnegie hire Hill to do these interviews anyway?  To see what those people were doing that the rest of us WERE NOT! Now there is a Blueprint for advanced achievement and wealth … and guess what? While Think and Grow Rich is the 6th best selling book of all time, PEOPLE DO NOT STUDY IT. Oh, they may read it, OR, be one of the masses who ‘buy books and NEVER READ THEM them.’ Yes, it’s true. Buying … and even reading a book does not commit it to memory or to habitual behavior … the whole point of the book!

I listen to Hill’s old recordings of the philosophy of personal achievement as often as possible. In these recordings, Hill reveals some of ‘what makes a man.’

As a young boy, Hill’s mother died and his father quickly remarried and introduced his new wife, Napoleon’s step mother, to Hill, who had decided he was not GOING TO LIKE her.  Who could replace one’s own mother anyway?

As determined as Hill was to dislike is step mother, she was the first person to see the potential within him, encourage him, and be his biggest proponent. She was a huge influence on him for this and another important incident.

One day his stepmother’s dental plate fell to the floor and broke in two. Hill’s father was able to solve a way to bond it until another could be made. The plate worked so well, the father began to offer dentistry services. All went well, finances increased and the Hill’s were on their way toward living a more than meager life.

Another day a notice arrived by mail alerting the Hill’s that to practice dentistry, one had to be ‘certified.’ At that point Mr. Hill the father was ready to give up. The step mother however, launched him into action and encouraged and inspired to take the training! And he did, achieved his dentistry certificate, and moved his family into more and more comfortable surroundings.

Napoleon Hill learned acceptance and persistence from his step mother. Then when he stood around a cast iron kettle with others, sipping the cooked product, later to be sold for $500, including the kettle, by the doctor who created the libation to a local druggist – Hill met his wife to be. They were sipping coca cola.

Highly influenced by a powerful woman 100 years ago, and then offered the opportunity to connect with 500 US greats and their habits and practices of wealth creation over time, Napoleon Hill became a man’s man. While I am clear he was not a perfect man, he did walk the walk and talk the talk for to consolidate this volume of excellent teachings would require immersion and infusion of the principles and philosophy into his own being.

One of my favorite quotes by Hill, paraphrased, from Think and Grow Rich is this ….

Successful people make quick decisions and are very slow to change them, if at all.

On September 11, I will facilitate an ABSOLUTE Mastermind™ based on Think and Grow Rich over an 8 weeks, in person, my 30th of this kind. More information HERE  on this study.

Do It AFRAID!

Everything sounds perfect … except for one thing, she said. “I’m AFRAID!”

“Yes,” I said, “I know. Did you know that really successful people look at ‘being afraid’ as a BIG GREEN LIGHT to grow? We muster courage when we are afraid and when we DO IT ANYWAY, we grow in awareness of our REAL and infinite potential!”
She did it … AFRAID!  That was my daughter when given an opportunity for which she had prayed and asked for two years.
————————
A 16 year middle school science teacher, twice nationally certified, and recent teacher of the year, my daughter started seeing herself stuck in one job until retirement and she was not happy about that visual. [Many would be thrilled to have that kind of tenure, right?] She is well liked, well known, and well respected in her position, yet under normal teaching curricula; she was unable to teach only advanced children or her favorite subjects, in depth.

She was offered a position to ‘create’ a science curriculum for advance students in 6, 7, and 8th grades for an entire county. But it would be at a different school!

She was comfortable at her old school. She knew the curriculum, the teachers, the students and the administration. And they all knew her.

This would be a new school, a new curriculum to develop, new administration, teachers, and logistics. Nothing to count on except, if this new curriculum were done well, SHE would be the ONE to teach it to other science teachers all over the county? How perfect!

After our talk as you saw above, she made the Decision (8th principle of success in Think and Grow Rich) and took the job. While she mentions to me that as students matriculate out of middle school, they always come back to see her and she would miss seeing them, hey, she says out loud, she could put a picture of herself on her old classroom door with her new location so those kids would find her.

Remember this … when you ‘feel’ uncomfortable, there are only 2 ways to go …

1) Your comfort zone where you grow very little (if at all).
2) Out of your comfort zone where you muster courage, stretch, and grow into your own greatness.

Next time something you really want shows up and it scares you … will you do it ‘afraid?’
